Kevin Nabors Bio

 

Born and raised on Chicago’s Southside, Kevin Nabors Jr. attended Gershwin Academy, where he began his unlikely music career. Influenced by the sounds of jazz he heard at home, he began to play in school. His band (Mr. Newsome Oatis) director started him on the clarinet, but he quickly progressed to the saxophone. While in concert band he auditioned for the All-City High School Band. He was chosen and juggled the responsibility of All-City’s concert band and jazz band, as well as the coursework of Chicago Vocational High School. The youngest musician in All-City, Kevin set a record of nine years as a band member. Upon graduation from high school he attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where he majored in Music Performance. Kevin also attended Chicago State University where he majored in Music Education. He has studied under Von Freeman, Jimmy Health, Ernie Watts, Pharez Whitted, Ernest Dawkins, Ron Carter, Stacy Dillard, Ari Brown, and Roxanne Stevenson. Kevin has also done theatre work with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Jazz in the Alley, Black Ensemble Theatre, Muntu Dance Theatre, Gala ,Goodman Theatre, Chicago Arts Building for the Performing Arts, Chicago Jazz Festival, South Shore Jazz Festival,Hyde Park Jazz Festival, The Legendary Velvet Lounge, Jazz Showcase, Andy’s Jazz Club, Pops and Champagne, Underground Wonder Bar, Green Mill, Hilton Hotel, JW Marriott (Chicago), Sons D Hiver (Paris) ,Vision Festival (NYC),The Jazz Standard (NYC), Snug Harbor, Blue Nile, Spotted Cat Music Club, Three Muses, The Irvin Mayfield Penthouse Play, Sonata Hotel (NOLA) The Majestic Theatre & The Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, Majestic Theatre, San Antonio Jazz Festival, KTRU 91.7FM  Jazz Festival, The Witte Museum, (San Antonio), Ghana Jazz Festival, Colorado Jazz Festival Tour, Rome Jazz Festival, Moline Jazz Festival, Polish Music Festival, and The World Music Festival. These days you can find him sharing the stage with the likes of Robert "Babbe" Irving (Miles Davis MD), Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Fred Anderson, Winard Harper, Clark Terry, Bill Summers (Herbie Hancock’s Percussionist), George Freeman (Charlie Parker Guitarist), Roy Hargrove, Robert Glasper, Ernest Dawkins, Ari Brown, Maurice Brown, Isaiah Spencer, Guy King, Chico Debarge, KRS-1 and Corey Wilkes.
